State is well organized with a division of labour amount ministries (military,
agricultural, astrology “rites).
Judicial and financial system.
Civil service selected on the basis of merit (under the influence of Confucianism
ethical philosophy/ancestors’ worship) who said the state should have people made of
integrity and virtues.
Used experiments to determine who had merit (civil service exams).
In the Song Dynasty, you could only be placed in after writing these “merit exams” of
memorization.
The aristocracy will hire a tutor to school their sons to write the exams, but a
commoner could as well (based on learning).
Confucianism says parents should provide for their kids and kids should listen/obey
their parents (commoner VS emperor relationship).
Invested in lots of infrastructure which helped agricultural canals for grain transport to
unify China’s economy, facilitated transportation.
China was an agriculturally based country.
There was still peasants and land owners but not as severe as Europe.
Agricultural surplus and extensive commercial trade in the Song Dynasty, the state
could start wanting money instead of food.
Tax-In-Kind: Rice farmer pays taxes in bushels of rice.
The peasant must sell foods and pay taxes in coin.

Merchants come up with the idea of “credit” that there will be money paid and
certificate of deposit.
Song Dynasty invented the “Banknotp” (bank note?).
Landed Gentry (Mandarin Class) could have a personal library and travel logs, due to
printing in China.
The state could print paper and put a worth of coin on it. The paper is lightweight
and easier to carry than coins.
Soldiers will be payed in money.
Cities/Towns in the Song Dynasty are modern.
“Downtown” and “entertainment” – tea houses, brothels, etc.
Mandarin class wanted to live the city life, not just in some village.

Mid Song Dynasty had 5 cities with at least a million people and 52 cities with
100,000 people.
Song Dynasty was very urbanized.
Northern Italy’s population began to flourish after the 1300s to brag that 6 cities had
a population of 50,000 as compared to China.
Trade.
China is a great trading power.
“Chinese Silk Road being imported by Romans as nobody knew how to make silk.
Parts of the world wanted Chinese goods (silk, porcelain).
The Chinese invented/found out porcelain first until the 18th century of creating
porcelain.
