History of abnormal psychology: the scientific study of abnormal behaviour in an effort to describe, predict, explain and change abnormal patterns of functioning. Deviance different, extreme, unusual, even bizarre: from behaviors. , thoughts and emotions that differ from society"s ideas about proper functioning: social norms: unstated rules for proper conduct, judgements of abnormality vary from society as norms grow from a particular culture. Dysfunction interfering with the person"s ability to conduct daily activities in a constructive way: does not necessarily indicate psychological abnormality, culture plays a role in the definition of abnormality. Distress unpleasant and upsetting: behaviour, ideas or emotions usually have to cause distress before they can be labeled normal. Danger risk of harm: behaviour may consistently careless, hostile or confused, dangerousness is the exception rather than the rule, could also be a danger to themselves in a number of ways. Treatment: once clinicians decide that a person is suffering from abnormality, they seek to treat it.
