Introductory lecture
Anthropology of the body:
• Encompasses anthropology, sociology, and biology.
• Bryan turner: in contrast to sociology the human body has been given a central place
o 1: concerned with posing questions about the universal essence of humanity
▪ question are we different and or are we the same.
▪ The universal essence of humanity.
o 2: nature and culture. The differences between nature and culture. Two sides of
the coin, but the coin has an edge – Esher: a Mobius struck, an s curve that
follows itself. Culture in many ways now has consumed nature. In short the
question here is what is the human?
o 3: evolutionism to anthropology.
▪ 3 ideas adopted from Darwinian biology human being are arty of nature
or nature themselves, racial difference, doctrine of natural selection
(survival of the fittest to describe social change)
o 4: anthropology developed theories of the body because the body was
extremely important
▪ marked social status, family position, tribal affiliation, age, gender,
religious conditions.

• Understanding embodiment
o Putting something into the body as a social construction
o Inhibition the body and intention
o These 2 terms are used by phenomenologists.
o Intersubjective between the two, to inhabit an intention.
Judith Farkor:
• Decentering western phenomenology through studying Chinese medicine at Chinese
medical college
• Ind. Self was a construction of European grammar
• In mandarin, the body is centered between a heaven and an underworld.
• The word for body rhymes with spirit.
• Takes up Pierre Bourdieu’s ork i haitus eause the laguage of Chiese is

• Aging in India.
• Post Foucauldian
• Interested in assemblage of the body. How do people aging in India come to see their
bodies is that the people who consumed youth elixirs were the aged? Wrote a book
