Anthropology of the body:
Encompasses anthropology, sociology, and biology.

o 1: concerned with posing questions about the universal essence of humanity
question are we different and or are we the same.
The universal essence of humanity.
o 2: nature and culture. The differences between nature and culture. Two sides of
the coin, but the coin has an edge Esher: a Mobius struck, an s curve that
follows itself. Culture in many ways now has consumed nature. In short the
question here is what is the human?
o 3: evolutionism to anthropology.
3 ideas adopted from Darwinian biology human being are arty of nature
or nature themselves, racial difference, doctrine of natural selection
(survival of the fittest to describe social change)
o 4: anthropology developed theories of the body because the body was
extremely important
marked social status, family position, tribal affiliation, age, gender,
religious conditions.
Lock + Parkour:
Bryan Turner: why the body became a field of study.
o 1: growth of consumer culture that came out of the 2 wars.
o 2: development of postmodernism
o 3: second wave feminist movement
o 4: bio politics
demographic changes of structure of populations
infectious diseases.
Global environmental crisis.
Humans each have bodies and we also create other bodies:
Social constructionism
o EX: why the homeless are homeless does’t hae to do ith hat’s iatel i
the person, but structural violence.
Experience
o Not a ojet stud of itself ut a thikig of it i its eistetial orld ad that’s
what anthropologists are interested in.

The way we think is socially situated, nothing like essential essence here.
Loic Wacquantt:
Anthropology from the body.

term the pugilistic body.
His method to get anthropology from the body and he must go native, rejection of
mundane, something of the ascetic.
Thomas Csordas:
Understanding embodiment
o Putting something into the body as a social construction
o Inhibition the body and intention
o These 2 terms are used by phenomenologists.
o Intersubjective between the two, to inhabit an intention.
Judith Farkor:

Ind. Self was a construction of European grammar
In mandarin, the body is centered between a heaven and an underworld.
The word for body rhymes with spirit.
