Cladocereans are water flies and known for their jerky movement. Daphnia are ectothermic, meaning they cannot self regulate. Therefore, there temperature fluctuates depending on the environment around them. In temperate greater than 40 degrees celsius, their proteins begin to denature, therefore they can no longer function and die. Thoracic legs: 5 pairs, used for creating a water current and filter feeding. Antennae: biramous form (a pair), used like oars for swimming. Post abdominal claw: removes debris from under the carapace. Posterior spine: provides protection against smaller predators (spine length increases, if predation rates increase) Brood pouch: sac at the end of the oviducts (contains 2-20 eggs: parthenogenisis: fertilization of an egg, withouth sperm. Favorable months = summer = only females produced. Prior to death, females molt a sac containing fertilized eggs. The eggs remain dormant until the spring. Females molt the sac with a hard protective layer. No gills, gas exchange occurs in the area under the carapace.
