Mutation is a key tool in genetics: geneticists use a gene knock-out approach to determine how the change of genotype affects the phenotype and to infer the functions of genes from this. An allele is an alternative form of a gene (ex: green pea vs yellow pea) A gene: sequence of dna which codes for a molecule which has a function. Genotype: the genetic constitution of an organism. Phenotype: an organism"s observable traits; a result of the organnism"s genotype. Mendellian inheritance has to do with single gene inheritance patterns.
