Billions of devices run unix or some derivative of it. 1960s multics: people used to use punch cards to program computers. Problems in time period: how to make multiple programs run at once. Multics: one of the first multi processing operating systems. Had to rewrite code every time you wanted to use it on a new computer, because each computer processed slightly differently; if you could override this issue, your program could be used on any computer! Unix created to be cross platform such that the interface would be the same on any computer. Linux= unix-like operating system; a branch which has a new user interface and it has the most functional kernel. Unix, linux and derivatives like android and os x dominate worldwide use. Be aware: we will not need to know the functionality of unix vs. Linux because they are fairly similar: multiuser/ multitasking, computers should be able to serve more than one person at a time.
