He noticed age related similarities in how children attempted to solve certain tasks. He saw that within specific age ranges there were specific types of deficits and specific types of strengths in problem solving skills. Interaction with one"s physical and social environments is essential for cognitive development. The process of equilibration promotes progression toward increasingly complex thought.
