Beginnings
B’reshith - the head/top
Genesis - two different perspectives. the 1st one says God’s name and the second one says the
Lord. Genesis is from all of the generations that are listed after that of who had who.
En arche - what the Greek speaking Jews tried to put instead of B’reshit. En arche has different
languages and sources
Birth - Generations are listed until the birth of Jesus. Gives credibility to Jesus (comes from
important people, people we heard of before). Makes a connection between the old testament
and the new.
Becoming - Matthew mentions John the Baptist. Beginning of the good news of Jesus (situate it
in your own history, makes it more credible)
Generation - Luke: library emerges.
From the top - John: makes a link to Genesis 1 to tell us that Jesus is in fact God (he is
somehow related). For John this creation stuff is Jesus stuff now. John did not copy, there is a
lot more releasing stuff. Different stream of Christianity that people are not aware of (maybe the
other books got it wrong). However, they are all part of one unified bible
“But the bible’s disregard for unity is quite as impressive as its observance of it: its just as
possible to look at it as a large miscellaneous heap of badly established texts” -Northrop Frye
-“Sites of struggles” different readers of the bible and different strategies causes tension
Cain and Abel
Cain founded the first city and killed his brother Abel. He jumped over the stone wall and killed
his brother and found the city (similar to the story of Romulus and Remus)
The ideas of beginnings are not necessarily our ideas of the begging at all and they serve
different ideas and purposes
Adam and Eve - how do we know? they are naked and she is holding an apple
Malum and malum - evil and apple they sound alike
-> Suppose to have associations - the idea that God sees everything
-> Something about temptation and women’s bodies
-> Satire of the creation story
Political/cultural battle to say that the signs of religion (kippah, hijab) are too widely expressed
Video: focuses on what it means to be human
The strategy is refusing certain parts of science (turning science into something evil)
The brain is the thing that did the inventing
Presents the six days of creation as a condensed version of how the world has evolved (cosmic
and physical evolution) something you can feel good about, it is a satisfying story. Says it is
Adam’s sin because he was the one with the knowledge - suppose to be the one in
charge, suppose to be dominant, smarter.. Has to do with ecology humans are to blame
for how terrible things have become
Eden and “nature” in western culture
Lynn White Jr. - that people are masters of nature and the argument is that people
dominate it.
Peter Harrison - it is true that there is a problem with the idea that humans dominate
nature but for most of human history we weren't in charge of everything. so for most of
human history the dominion was allegorical or over yourself and self knowledge (literal
dominion becomes a moral dominion)
Carol Merchant - if you're in charge of your world ecology you have a responsibility to
make sure you treat it properly. If the idea that things are fine when women were equal,
when men took power things went sideways - problem with men having too much power.
