Historical-critical method: we have inherited these traditions

-A prophet
-Many sources
-Oral traditions
-Moses/God/Jesus
What is western culture ?
-Capitalist, atheist
-Culture of 1st world countries
-Developed culture
How might a class on the bible and western culture be useful to you?
-Understand institutional oppression
-To become more open minded
-Help me teach ethics
What fruit did Adam and eve eat from the tree?
-In latin, malum = evil or apple
-Augustine of hippo - concupiscence (lust). People can control their sexual desires.
-I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or
argument; also that the women should dress themselves modestly and in suitable clothing, not
with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls or expensive clothes..
-Let a women learn in all silence and submission. I permit no woman to teach or have authority
over a man; she is to keep silent. For Adam was created first, then Eve; and Adam was not
deceived, but the woman was deceived and became transgressor
Libraries:
-Some were written by Paul in 50 CE (common era/after death)
-Scrolls: Riches. Some of the first things composed as tradition (songs, poetry) can go really far
back (11th/10th BCE). Collected in the old testament to the Tanakh (Torah, Nevihim, Ketubim;
law, prophets, writings)
2nd century CE - new testament

-The dead sea scrolls: in Hebrew (writing from right to left, vowels added later). No breaks in the
writing
-New technology: papyrus. Not everyone can afford to buy it (have to save as much room as
possible)
-Collections and books: every bible happens for a reason. What kinds of reasons? political
destructions (ex. of the temple)
-King Josiah said he found a bible in the wall. Needed order in his kingdom so he conveniently
found a bible. It was spread because it was needed at a certain time.
-Destruction/exile - babylonian. Written traditions: no temple or land so the only way to have an
identity is to have a collection of written things. If you depended on the temple and land to
define who you are and then none of it is there you are in exile. One way to have a community
is to have a bible.
-Cyrus - Ezra: talks about a collection of laws that he has. Jews deciding who they're gonna
be when they come back and non Jews saying whether or not it’s okay.
-(Political) destruction of the 2nd temple - Rome. In Rome, they paraded the stuff in the temple
to show how tough they were. Josephus: idea of what a Jew is involves a scroll. New
testament happens at this point in time. Old testament finalized after the new testament.
-In the libraries: the old and new testament. The old testament is what Riches called the TaNaK
(Torah - law, Nevihim - prophets, Ketuvim - writings)
-The new testament: gospels, letters and apocalypse(s) Christian bible written in Greek.
-Apocrypha/deuterocanon/inter-testamental: history/legends, wisdom lit: Catholics, orthodox
bibles. Books that the Jews had but not all Jews have anymore and not all Christians have. Ex:
Maccabees.
-Question: what do you think you might put in the empty space if you were muslim? the koran to
say what the bible really meant.. etc
-Where the bible comes from?
-Palestine, Syria, Corinth and Rome
Criticism
Making judgements, challenging, giving feedback
Historical, textual, literary, cultural, ethical and rhetorical. They can overlap.
Bruce Lincoln on “How to Read a Religious Text”
Human products: the source is metaphysical
As a scholar, you have to have intellectual independence, integrity and critical spirit.
As a scholar you look at : Who is trying to persuade whom of what? In what context/
what are the consequences?
Religious texts can help reinforce certain status quo or modify it.
Your actions reflect by what you believe.
We are interested in situation who gave us this stuff, we wanna know the situation of the
people who handed it on, their situation of interest, which has always already been
normalized and naturalized by the proper speculations of other like them. None of this
happens in a vacuum.
Post Reformation: challenge the idea of one church, one pope etc. We’re looking at Post
enlightenment where students use systematic study, and human reason. In the end, the
decision comes from ourselves and not the church or an authority.
Luther - challenged the practices of the church through grammatical sense, theological
sense.
Creationists - Use the bible to reject science.
Why do people study the bible, why do they care? - !they want to include everybody.
It has historical roots, and ethical reasons and inform biblical criticism.
