Introduction to Interscholastic Sport
1. Interscholastic sport Refers to
organized competitive sport carried out
between educational institutions.
2. Interscholastic is not the same as
intramural.
3. Intramurals sports usually organized
by student athletic associations on a more informal basis.
a. Ex: Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE) Provides leadership intramural
school sports. (Formerly known as Canadian Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD)
i. Used to be CAHPERD today known as PHE.

1. How do interscholastic programs in
Canada compare to those in the United
States?

interscholastic sports?

Interscholastic Sport: Canada vs. USA
Primarily a question of Scale:
1. In the United States, sports are seen as a
significant part of the development system
2. Full-time paid coaches not seen at the high
school level in Canada
*However, you do find full-time paid coaches
in HS at the US.
3. Large crowds regularly pay to see high
school sports in the U.S., but not in Canada
4. Canadian high schools offer a greater
diversity of sports and a less intense level of
competition
*US is more invested in sports than Canada.

1. Home of the nation’s No. 2 high school football team, possesses a 41,000-square
foot athletic complex. It is better than most University facilities.

planned to introduce a bill to ban Gorman HS
due to unfair advantage
2. Prevented Gorman from competing for

3. Unclear as to whether he was targeting the
football team or the entire athletic

4. To date, it does not appear that the bill has
been written or approved
5. Mixed reviews of support given to this ban

Interscholastic Sport: Canada vs. USA
1. There is an even greater difference between Canada and the U.S. at the University level
2. Division I NCAA football, basketball, and hockey games are broadcasted in Canada
3. Notably, he mentions that we need to figure out how to make athletes play great within
academics instead of bending the rules for them.
