Lecture 9 Interventions: Behaviour Approaches
4 Approaches to INCREASE PA via Interventions
1. Informational Approach
1. Knowledge
2. Attitude
2. Behavioural Approach
1. Management Skills
3. Social Approach
1. Influence and Environment
4. Environmental and Policy Approach
1. Physical and Organizational Structure
Behavioural Approaches
Objective: Teach people behavioral skills that will help them initiative and maintain a physical
activity program
1. Help People recognize cues and
opportunities for PA
2. Develop strategies to maintain PA levels
3. Learn to recognize and manage situations
that may cause lapse
4. Develop strategies to prevent relapse into
sedentary lifestyle
1. Behaviour change and maintenance is constant (similar to home maintenance).
a. So, it’s like a cycle.
2. Having the tool for different “jobs” is critical.
a. Need to have the proper tools to cause a behaviour change
b. Example of a Flaw: How simply giving knowledge is supposed to cause
behavioural change doesn’t work due to lack of proper tools.
3. What tools/skills does someone need to adopt Physical Activity. Also, what tools does
someone need to continue being physically active?
1. Goal Setting
2. Time Management
3. Motivation
4. Support
5. Information
6. Guidance
7. Equipment
8. Interest
9. Attitude
10. Facilities
(environment)
11. Confidence
12. Reinforcement

Behaviour Approaches
1. Article: The Behaviour Change Taxonomy (Michie et al., 2013)
a. There’s 93 different techniques to cause a behavioural Change
2. Behaviour Change Technique (BCT)
1. an observable, replicable, and
irreducible component of an
intervention designed to alter or
redirect causal processes that regulate
behavior; that is, a technique is
proposed to be an “active ingredient
*Definitely on Exam
2. 93 BCT in 16 clusters

3. Not all 93 BCTs are behavioural, also
touch on informational, social, and
political approaches/techniques.
3. Behavioural Approaches that we’ll focus on: Part of the 93 techniques
1. Goal Setting (Behaviour)
2. Action Planning
3. Behavioural Contract
4. Self-monitoring of Behaviour
5. Biofeedback
6. Prompts/Cues
7. Reduce Prompts/Cues
8. Behaviour Substitution
9. Restructuring the physical environment
10. Self-talk
11. Problem solving: Implementation
intentions & coping planning
4. Trying to Determine which of
the 93 BCT are the most used
and most effective.
a. X = Success in
promoting PA when
present in the
intervention
b. Y = Popular in
Interventions
Summary:

*All 4 promoted PA when present in an intervention
1. Goal Setting
2. Self-monitoring
3. Action Planning
4. Problem Solving
6. French (2014) Among Older Adults
1. Goal Setting
It was popular but wasn’t impactful
2. Self-monitoring
Increased Self-efficacy when present in an
intervention
3. Problem Solving
Promoted PA when present in an
intervention
4. Set graded tasks
Increased both PA and Self-efficacy
5. Rewards
Promoted PA when present in an
intervention
7. Ma (2018) Among People with disabilities
1. Goal Setting
*It was popular but
wasn’t impactful
2. Self-monitoring
*Promoted PA when
present in an
intervention
3. Problem Solving
*It was popular but
wasn’t impactful
4. Set Graded Tasks
*Promoted PA when
present in an
intervention
Behavioural Approach Examples
1. Implementation of Intentions (Part of
Problem solving):
*When I walk passed the park after school,
then I will go play on the park structure.
2. Goal Setting:
* Hello class! Let’s brainstorm and select
what we want to achieve by the end of term.
Then, we will need to break down that broad
objective into smaller ones.
3. Self-Monitoring:
*For homework this week, I want everyone
to write down the activities you do between
the end of the school day until bedtime.
Remember to write the hours at which you
do those activities
4. Action Planning:
* I will decide how many days to workout
and write down in my calendar the specific
details of when, where and what I will do.
Behavioural Approach: Case Study
Garfield: Work through the behavioural Approaches to help him.
1. 18-year old, first year university student at
McGill
2. Moved to Montreal from a small northern
Ontario town
3. He realized that the « Frosh 15 » is not a
myth for him. He has gained 15 pounds since
September.
4. He wants to get back into being active. He
used to run the 1500m and 5000m track
events at his high school.
