Document Summary
October 4th: goodman and elgin continued distinction between autographic and allographic art work. An ontological distinction. (ontology= discovering the underlying nature of things) ex: the chair i"m sitting on. The chair belongs to a category ontologically speaking: an artifact. But i don"t belong to the same category. Categorical differences between things we encounter in the world. Autographic artwork is intimately tied to the conditions of its making. The identity is such that we can find multiple instances of it (ex: vinyl record) The identity of the artwork doesn"t depend on who the author was and what they were intended. The identity of the allographic artwork does not depend on it being a physical object (what the object is made of) Three instances of the same" artwork in content, not in form. (but there could be qualitative differences to take into consideration: differences in sound according to the format of the recording)
