Archduke franz ferdinand and his wife sophie were in sarajevo to visit the army manouvers that were happening in the area. This was a symbolic visit as bosnia-herzegovina was annexed in 1908. The family needed to be seen in order to promote the austro-hungarian royal family. There were concerns about their safety as many members of the royal family had been assassinated over the decades. Austrians replaced the ottoman turks when b-h became independent and they were seen as the colonial overlords: bosnians were forced to adopt german. After the grenade was thrown, sophie and franz insist they wanted to see the officers at the hospital. The driver did not know where he was going and so he took a wrong turn, he had to get out of the car to push it and turn it around. He tried to turn the car around right in front of gavrilo princip. Annexed by austria-hungary and were forced to adopt their language.
