Document Summary

Cultural hegemony can be defined as the political and cultural domination of elitist norms and values whilst simultaneously suppressing other, more marginalized, groups. There are two types of hegemony; colonialism and nationalism. Colonialism, as defined in class, is the imposition of dominance of the west over colonies and the creation of difference, divisions, and hierarchy. Nationalism is the dominance of local elites within a nation-state resulting in the creation of homogeneous values and imagined communities . An argument can be made that cultural hegemony is present within the process of development. Within the two types of hegemony in development, the dominant image of africa and the hegemony of neoliberalism, dominant cultures hold all the power in the society. Methods and technologies used to enforce the false consciousness created by hegemony includes religious institutions, textbooks, the media, family, and print media . These cultural institutions aid in the legitimization of dominant ideals and further entrench unchallenged aspects of the governing ideologies.
