Genetics is important to individuals, to society, and to the study of biology. A genome is a complete set of genetic instructions for any organism. Coding system for genomic information very similar among organisms. Transmission genetics: field of genetics that encompasses the basic principles of genetics and how traits are inherited. Molecular genetics: study of the chemical nature of genetic information and how it is encoded, replicated, and expressed. Population genetics: study of the genetic composition of populations (groups of members of the same species) and how their gene pools change with the passage of time. Model genetic organisms are organisms with characteristics that make them useful for genetic analysis. Six have been the most intensively studied genetically: fruit fly, e. coli, roundworm, thale cress plant, house mouse, baker"s yeast. Common characteristics of model organisms: short generation time, production of numerous progeny, the ability to be reared in a laboratory environment.
