PATH 300 Study Guide - Final Guide: Obstructive Lung Disease, Unfolded Protein Response, Pulmonary Heart Disease
Document Summary
Diseases of the respiratory system part ii (chp 12, lecture 17) In this lecture, we will discuss disease caused by lifestyle choices which are largely preventable. An obstructive lung disease characterised by long term poor airflow, main sxs are shortness of breath and cough with sputum. Studied in 1940s-50s by the british, spurred bc ppl were dying from resp problems due to burning coal. This was the first time that they inflated lungs to examine them, found holes in them leading to the term copd. Changes to fingers (hypertrophy) and nails aka structural changes. Discovery of another group of individuals who had very thin lungs with holes in them and great trouble breathing, died from pneumonia and other such diseases. At this time, it was not common practice to dissect inflated lungs in the usa (or germany) so they were not able to observe this phenomenon. Combined, they lead to destruction of the lungs and to chronic bronchitis.
