• For many societies, war has been an innate and continuous cultural activity
Europe for centuries was such a society
o And why not? War, if successful, paid off in terms of power and territory.
If not successful, the burden was borne by those who were in the way or
• The Enlightenment, or as it was also known as an “antiwar movement,” was
fuelled by moral considerations. Kant suggested that war persisted in 18 century
Europe as a way of life among the ruling classes
o War might be necessary if democracies and nationstates were to promote
and extend their values
• As long as wars were conducted economically, the peoples of Europe were
content with belligerence.
