Laurier expected trade liberalization to appeal to the largest class of voters: farmers, particularly the largest export sectors in agriculture which are wheat and dairy farming. If urban-rural split, liberals would win 191 to 30. If cleavage is agricultural exporting vs everybody else, liberals would win 126 to 95. Results: liberals were badly defeated, failed to win the majority of rural seats. Sector-specific view: liberals lost rural districts on wheat and rural districts on dairy. Explain through intra-industry firm heterogeneity, which argues that the most efficient producers export.
