State centric : it assumes that world politics is the result of what states do. Legitimacy (constructivist: sovereignty is an internalized norm for most states - acceptance of sovereignty as legitimate, limitation: states do sometimes violate sovereignty despite the norm - not always true empirically. Ir paradigms: realism, main elements, high regard for the values of national security and state survival, the desire to enjoy an advantage over others and to avoid domination by others is universal. Permanent state of war man vs man. Being secure and at peace, they are now free to prosper (felicity: the (cid:1688)security dilemma": achievement of personal/domestic security must be accompanied by national/international insecurity, schelling and strategic realism, strategic realism focuses on foreign-policy decision making. All states function the same/ are the same --> collect tax, foreign policy, domestic order, etc. Only difference is in the varying capabilities in achieving those tasks/ power.
