In 1867 confederation had supporters as well as opponents, but few canadian were unequivocal federalists. In 1865, john a. macdonald believed that the unitary features of the constitution would save. Canada from the common afflictions of federations; yet even he later admitted that the little difficulties raise by federation could not be settled so simply. Opponents of confederation warned that canada would suffer the common and unhappy fate of the federations, of which the american civil war was the immediate reminder. Confederation debates raise vital questions of political and constitutional theory. As a result, the debates of 1865 record and important canadian discussion about federalism and the beginnings of the distinctively canadian federalist theory.
