Id (unconscious desires, having sex and breaking things) Ego (partly conscious, mediator, balances id & superego) Responsible for all thoughts, behaviors, feelings idea called psychic determinism. Psychic determinism: every behavior is caused by something else. Defense mechanisms: tools used by ego to reduce anxiety: repression: avoid unpleasant memories / motivated forgetting. Each time would be abused, would split off into new personality (dissociative identity disorder: reaction formation: when something anxiety-inducing, you do the complete opposite. People who report the most homophobia have the most arousal while watching homosexual videos / try to reduce homosexual tendencies by becoming homophobic instead. Sublimation: when you have a pattern of thinking that society would lock down on so you convert into something that is adaptive in the society that you live in.
