Semanticity: the extent to which a language can use symbols to transmit meaningful messages (ideas, objects, events, etc. ) Example: giving someone a flower arrangement when they graduate (because a flower arrangement can symbolize congratulations) Psycholinguistics: a branch of cognitive psychology devoted to the study of the acquisition, comprehension, and production of language (whereas linguists study the rules of language, psycholinguists study verbal behavior and cognition. Phonology: the rules that govern the patterns of sounds that are used in a language (which sounds are used, and how they"re combined) Phonemes: the basic distinctive speech sounds in a language that distinguish one word (ex. rice) from another (ex. lice: r and l are different phonemes in english, but this isn"t the case for all languages (ex. Japanese only has one phoneme in this acoustic neighbourhood rather than two: phonological rules govern how phonemes can be combined in a given language.
