Applications for admission into the ph. d program of one of the major research university are sorted on arrival into one of four boxes below 1200, 1200-1300, 1300-1400 and over 1400. The first applications to be read are from the box above 1400, or two standard deviation above the mean. According to the national center for fair and open testing, the ability of the gre to predict grade is extremely weak. The exam accounted for a weak ass 9% of the variation among student"s first year grades. Undergraduate grades are a better predictor (14%, still low) Gre does not predict clinical skils or not even the ability to solve real-life problems.
