Constructing hindu (men) as morally inferior and sexually weak, colonialism prompted reactionary nationalism which brought men"s sexuality to forefront, while subordinating women. Colonialism constructed a marked divide between ruler and subject. Divide was imbued with further meanings: as ruler, white englishman was. Strength of british male to control female. Indigenous elite men reacting to this: this reaction tried to undo this by reasserting masculinity in nationalist sphere and this happened by subordinating women. Not 100% true while women received subordinate place the discourse around women jumps out into foreground so it is not that people are not talking about women/women"s issues - they are! The only people doing this talking around woman"s question were not women and if they were women (rarer) they were very elite women.
