Today, many jews combine the above two categories and they were not impacted by the mainstream european culture. Most jews in north america are descended from ashkenazi jews, jews who come from central and eastern europe who speak yiddish (similar to german). Over 90% of north american jews are ashkenazi; in israel, only 50% Oriental and sephardic jews recently shaped by culture of islam and arabic; Ashkenazi by europe (ex: enlightenment period that challenged religion) Also differences within these broad categories, e. g. german jews and eastern.
