Has seen numerous doctors, and been on various pain medications. Because there has been no explanation for his pain, or effective treatment he has gone into withdrawal, and feels isolated. Pain: generally thought of as an outward manifestation, which fails to consider the social and cultural influences of pain. Chronic pain: leads to frustration and distrust of practitioners who are unable to explain and or treat the illness. Private pain: to know if a person is in pain we are dependent on them signaling to us. ^ private pain is invisible which leads to senses of isolation due to issues of justification (pain authenticity) In howards case his children do not believe him because he cannot justify the pain he is feeling. Public pain: depends on persons interpretation of significance of pain. These attitudes towards pain are acquired early in life, and can change over time. Pain authenticity: legitimized by how the patient signals to others.
