Patronage, faith, and secular life in 14th century. Barrel vaulted chapel: a small scale religious space that"s got an arch-shaped top to it (barrel vault), which is also the ceiling to the chapel. Painted to look like a star-filled blue sky. Walls have scenes that tell us a story. Commissioned by enrico scrovegni, who was the patron and hired giotto to fill the chapel with wall paintings. Has also been called the arena chapel b/c it was painted on the side of an arena. Was previously a scared space part of a secular dwelling. Originally attached to enrico"s home which was destroyed in the early 19thc. Scene of the last judgement, located over the entrance door. Included scrovegni, who presented a model of the chapel to the virgin mary. A form of penance for scrovegni"s family business which was usury (loaning money at very high rates of interest)
