Document Summary
Monument to marshall bugeaud 1852 (public sculpture). He died of cholera in 1849 just after he was removed from his position. Public subscription paid for monument, meaning the people wanted it there. Dumont = most famous public sculptor at the time, and was commissioned for 5 more effigies, one for versailles. Bronze statue on giant slab of grey porphyry. Usually purple version used for burying royalty very expensive. Took a lot of time and effort to bring slab to algiers from local quarry. Monument was of freedom and triumph to french, symbol of oppression to natives and jews/muslims. And he is made to stand on the natural resources of their nation. Was no inscription until 1856 when dumont returned and complained to state. It was a monument to the idea of colonialism not the individual colonizer. Well established portraitist commissioned by empress soon after marriage. Synthesised spanish identity and new french role.
