Art history/classics 2bo3: greek art and architecture midterm i review. Pre-palace period 3000-2000 bc: architecture: set of rooms, no central plan, but rooms are differentiated by functions. Eg. house at myrtos: storage room room with altar. Early features: paved west court creates gather space and indicates central entrance and principle facade, stucco walls: frescos: paintings on plaster, vasilike ware long spouted jug. Clay pellets on spout emulate eyes, spout = beak zoomorphic design: minoan burial at kamilari: tholos tomb (c. 2500-2200) Built with two forms: one circular (body placed inside) When excavated no evidence of closure on top - could have been perishable material. Well thought out tomb, larger than it needs to be - dramatic to enter f irst thing towards monumentality - sophistication to impress: cycladic figurines c. 2500-2200 bc. Cyclades in the aegean sea - sort of a circle island - lot"s of marble. Marble figurines (local stone); 30-150 cm high.
