Monasteries fleeing from the world, running the world. Christianity was exemplified by a fair amount of unworldly commands on peace, love and goodwill. Conflict arose in the 6th century when the roman emperor decreed that it would be the religion of the empire, replacing roman gods and traditions. The main problems then became the spread of these ideals while maintaining their power, and their original intent. And so deviations began to arise, and not all of them in line with the original intent. Instead of those being eaten by the lions, some groups became the lions (crusades). But well, things happened and it became the official religion of rome. Yet it endured through the collapse of the roman empire. Rome disintegrated into a region of no central authority, tribes, villages, nobles, peasants, the works. Every hard-core high fantasy novel you can think of.
