Atoms, molecules, and life: define the term element. Elements are substances that cannot be broken down or converted to a simpler substance. An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains all the chemical properties of that element. Example: carbon and oxygen: describe sub-atomic components that comprise matter. Protons and neutrons are found inside the nucleus and electrons orbit outside of the nucleus: list the key elements found in living biological organisms, such as humans.
