Expectations placed on roman girls & women- marriage & reproduction & their consequences. : anti-luxury law that was an austerity measure imposed on women after the second punic war (with hannibal) Prohibited women from buying & wearing high-end jewelry & expensive clothes (especially things dyed purple) Supposedly helped to compensate for severe financial losses endured in the war. Repeal efforts introduced in 195 b. c. to conflicting reactions. Very existence of oppian law demonstrates that wealthy roman women were by no means (unlike greek counterparts) confined to their homes- their style of dress could attract attention.
