The bacteria like pneumonia, or bacteria causing legent elk disease consumed all the oxygen in the lake which made life impossible for any air breathing amphibians(fish etc. ) Phytoplankton was found 3 years after the eruption, which are plants that turn sunlight into oxygen. These plants were brought in by birds or winds and are the basic building block of aquatic life. Over months plankton population grew providing the oxygen and food for the lake.
