The theis solution presented before assumed that the aquitards confining the aquifer were perfectly impermeable. This is seldom the case, and is frequently an unusable assumption. It is more often the case that the beds adjacent to the aquifer provide significant inflow leaky aquifer . The geometry and boundary conditions of multiple leaky aquifers create a system that cannot be solved analytically. Insight into the behaviour of leaky aquifers can be achieved through consideration of the simple system shown in this figure. In the idealized leaky aquifer system, the lower aquifer is pumped and water is induced to flow in through the top boundary.
