Infiltration - the remainder sinks or percolated downward into the ground: upper part of the crust behaves like a giant sponge that can soak up water. Permeability: the ease to flow: permeability - ability of a material to allow fluids to pass thru an interconnected network of pores. In unsaturated zone- region between ground and surface and water table- water percolates straight down. In saturated zone - water flw is more complex, in addition to gravity, water responds to differences in pressure: pressure can cause ground water to flow sideways or even upward. If watertable is horizontal - the pressure acting on an imaginary horizontal reference plane at a specific depth is the same everywhere. If the watetable is not horizontal, the pressure at points on a horizontal reference plane changes with location. 16. 4 tapping groundwater supplies: wells - holes that people dig/drill to obtain water.
