Hist 3cw3 canada in a world of empires, 1492-1919. Examine the function of imperialism in canadian history canada as colonized and as colonizer. Two ways to think about it: imperialism as a lens for canadian history, using canada to explore the history of imperialism. During lecture weeks all students will meet together. *exception: first two weeks and last two weeks of class. Seminar weeks will be divided into three seminar groups: group 1 monday, bsb 136, 12:30pm-1:20pm, group 2 monday, bsb 136, 1:30pm-2:20pm, group 3 wednesday, bsb 136, 1:30pm-2:20pm. Two components: seminar attendance and participation, seminar reading cards (approx. 200 words): analyze the arguments, content, and major themes of readings together. Research essay (incl. proposal) 35 percent: proposal due nov. 2 intro paragraph, thesis, outline, primary sources, essay due dec. 7 (2500-3000 words) Final exam 25 percent: details tba, essay-based exam, notes are allowed. Also: the manifestation of power of one group over another.
