Poor mental health: disorder/categorical model (dominant): mental illnesses exist as discrete categories, and one is mentally ill, or they are not. Specific illnesses are treated with specific treatments: distress/dimensional model: people score on a continuum of psychological distress, and all individuals express, to a lesser or greater extent, symptoms of mental illness. Individuals who experience greater psychological distress are considered unwell. Moral panic": times in history where there is widespread fear of something.
