An interdisciplinary eld that draws on research from the biological sciences, clinical medicine, and behavioural, and social sciences. Researchers work to produce accurate knowledge about aging (personality can change, etc. ) Professionals apply this knowledge to create a better life for older adults. Seeks to recognize the social, political, and cultural contexts in which older people live . Critical gerontologists argue that the increase in numbers of seniors is not the basic problem, but rather is it that this increase is taking place in a society that devalues the elderly. Vs. pollution (creates dementia), smoking, drinking decrease life expectancy. Thinning of hair comes with old age, balding is genetic. Age markers = hearing aids, canes, grey hair etc. (mean that they are becoming old, incapable) Some vision changes (need more light, peripheral changes, degenerative changes, etc. )
