Experiment: purpose of the research & types of research questions. Experimental research builds on the principles of a positivist approach. Three things researchers do in an experiment: begin with a hypothesis 2) modify something in a situation, compare outcomes with and without the modification. Compared to other forms of social research techniques, this is the strongest for testing causal relationships bc the 3 conditions for causality (temporal order, association, no alternative explanations) are best met in experimental designs. Random assignment (randomization) is a method for assigning cases (individuals, orgs, etc) to groups for the purpose of making comparisons.
