Embryonic period: extends from fertilization through the eighth week of development, development of organ systems. Fetal period: last 30 weeks, organ systems grow and mature: fertilization (12-24 hours after ovulation) Merging of genetic information from sperm and secondary oocyte. Sperm swim from the vagin ato the cervix using their tails. Sperm pass through the uterus and uterine tubes mainly due to contraction of the walls of these structures. Semen contains prostaglandins, binds to receptors on the walls of the uterine walls and tubes and stimulates contractions of those walls. Sperm are viable for 48 hours, fertilization can occur in a 3 day window - 2 days before ovulation and 1 day after. To fertilize an egg, sperm must penetrate the corona radiata (granulosa cells) and the zona pellucida (glycoprotein layer outside of the oocyte"s plasma membrane) Capacitation refers to the changes to the sperm itself to get through those 2 layers (tail of sperm beats faster)
