Motor skills are fundamental to human movement. Applicable in real life situations such as coaching, teaching (cognitive or movement skills) and training (instructional based on past experiences) High level performance, things that don"t come naturally without practice. Professional activities involving (re)learning and production of movements that have been lost (ie. physiotherapy, occupational therapy) Function can be derived from understanding the properties of underlying elements (ie. neurons, muscle composition etc) If we understand the structure of the cns, then function becomes obvious. The whole is equal to the sum of the parts. Cannot really understand function on the basis of structure or properties of elements. System must be studied as a whole. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Anything that involves multiple components (ie. texting, eating etc) For example, learning to ride a bike does not require an understanding of particle physics or gyroscopes (ie. the underlying elements)
