Smooth side of vertebrae is the anterior side, bony processes posterior side. Each individual vertebrae has an opening called a vertebral foramen hole within the region where the spiny processes are. When you stack the vertebrae on top of each other, successive holes create a canal vertebral canal where spinal cord is located. Vertebrae create a challenge because it curves, the spinal cord must also curve and maintain position in t he middle of t he column by using connective tissue layers called meninges. Between each of the vertebrae, there is a opening / hole called intervetebral foramina: where the spinal nerve exits spinal cord and extends out to periphery. Integrates information and produce responses, provide a pathway for nerve impulses that go to and from the brain. Sensory info from periphery and motor info goes to muscles and glands.
