Document Summary

Neurodevelopmental disorder effecting fine and/or gross motor coordination. Possibly genetics, gender related (more common with boys) Gross motor deficits: immature balance responses, awkward running, frequent falling and dropping, difficult replicating body positions, poor pa and hand-eye. Fine motor deficits: handwriting, gripping items and dressing are all issues. Acquisition and execution are below what is expected: should be able to walk 9-17 months, kick a ball 3 years, overhand throw by 5 years. Not better explained by intellectual disability or neurological condition. M-abc movement assessment battery for children is most commonly used to identify motor coordination problems in children: measures manual dexterity, aiming and catching and balance. Children with dcd show inconsistent motor performance because they have difficulty with motor learning. Have difficulties with planning motor tasks, organizing movements, performing a coordinated action and adjusting movements when demands change. Have difficulty with visuo-spatial processing, kinaesthetic perception, visual memory, processing speed and sensory integration. Without intervention, cannot grow out of disorder.
