Document Summary

Idea that words have meaning: phone ring, dog bark, car tires. Hiccup, giggles, sneezes: picking individual words out of the fluent stream of speech, a lot of learning has to happen. You can teach certain words, but for the most part, language knowledge is acquired just by being immersed in an enviro where language is used. Why are scientists interested in language acquisition: organization of mind, the challenge of cognitive science: can"t observe mind directly. Can"t look at mental processes or cognition: organization of language, applications, ways to help ppl with language delays or disorders, or ai, etc. not too concerned with this. How do we draw conclusions: even tools we have really only observe neural processes. Neural processes =/= mental processes: kids can"t introspect. "this was my pattern of thinking" not even accurate in adults. Speaking is effortful, but listening isn"t: happens with kids.
