Need to record the sound with the film. Solution to the problems of musical accompaniment recorded and synchronized sound. Sound and silent films existed together for several years. Demonstrations of sound films as early as 1922. Photograph of sound waves on the edge of the film excellent synchronization, poor audio quality: warner brother"s vitaphone (1926) audio recording on a phone disk, synchronized with the film projector except audio quality was poor. Playing the record wore it out because of its soft material. Recorded score primarily by william axt, performed by the new york phillharmoc orchestra. Vitaphone recorded music and some sound effects. No dialog since it was still a silent film. Also had a second score composed for live . The jazz singer 1927 music supervisor: louis silver. Dialogue was not rehearsed (improvised) because script writers did not exist. Conventional silent film with about 12mins of talking. Not so much hearing him speak, but overhearing him speak .
