What is Music Therapy?
- In a brochure by the National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT) 1960,
music therapy was defined as “the scientific application of the art of music to
accomplish therapeutic aims. It is the use of music and of the therapist’s self
to influence changes in behaviour.”
- American Music Therapy Association’s (AMTA) includes some
changes/additions:
Music therapy involves the clinical and evidence-based use of music
interventions to accomplish individualized goals
Research in music therapy indicates its effectiveness in areas such
as overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement,
increasing people’s motivation to become engaged in their
treatment and providing emotional support for clients and their
families
Music Therapy in Canada
- Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT) 1974
- CAMPT is federally incorporated, self-regulated non-profit processional
association
- It aims to create strong certified music therapists (MTAs) and bring
awareness about professional music therapy services through Canada
- CAMT wants to encourage the practice of music therapy in clinical,
educational, and community settings

how we associate with music
- Music is a flexible therapeutic medium (we can change how we use the
music to fit the client and meeting their healthcare goals) because it has
many different styles and a variety of ways in which one can be involved
ie: composing, performing, listening
- Music engages the whole brain; there’s nothing else we do that activates
the whole brain

Music as a Tool

- Music has also been found to alter moos and elicit relaxation responses
Music Therapy Nots
- The client of patient does not need to have a musical background
- Music therapy is not entertainment and does not refer to playing live or
recorded music or engaging in musical activities for leisure/as a hobby
- Music therapy does not refer to musical lessons to hone one’s skill on an
instrument or voice
- Music therapy is not special music educations in which specific techniques
and activities are used to teach special learners about music
