First day of menses is day 1 of menstrual cycle. Ovum meets viable sperm zygote (after fertilization) this happens in ampulla: takes 5 hours for their union need maturity. Remaining cells form corpus luteum secret progesterone: which prevents contractions, keeps uterus intact. Blastocyst: produces hcg this stimulates the corpus luteum to continue to make progesterone, day 20-24 (or 6-10) implantation into the uterus may cause slight bleeding leading the woman to think its her period. Specialized layer around blastocyst becomes placenta: acts as endocrine organ. Progesterone maintain uterus, increase alveoli, prevent contractions. Estrogen duct formation in breast, increase uterus weight and amount of receptors. Average pregnancy length: 280 days, 10 lunar months, 9 solar months, 40 weeks. Three trimesters: 0-12 weeks, 13-27 weeks, 28 weeks and beyond. A pregnant woman is called a gravida (regardless of the outcome: first pregnancy = primigravida, beyond that = multigravida. Parity: when a pregnancy has lead to birth at minimum gestation of 20 weeks.
