We will all develop our own unique immune systems tailored just for us. So, we have 3 types of defense mechanisms: natural barriers (our first line of defense) Natural physical barriers: include the epithelial layer of the skin & mucous membranes, lining of the gi, gu, and resp tracts: mechanical. Sloughing, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, urinating, cilial action of the resp. tract, low skin temperatures to discourage growth of bacteria: chemical. Mucous, perspiration, saliva, tears, earwax, etc that trap and kill microorganisms.
