The term cold war refers to the period of confrontation between the united states and former. The international system during this time was often described as bipolar, meaning 2 superpowers, although the now obsolete notion of a third. This was an oversimplification as often ideological and strategic conflict played out between the superpowers in the third world. Direct military impact took place in vietnam and afghanistan. There was also the use of proxy fighting forces to avoid direct intervention. Examples here include the mujahidin to challenge the soviet union in afghanistan, and the use of the cuban. Army to support leftist governments in southern africa. once both superpowers had access to nuclear weapons, any direct confrontation would have been, in the terminology of the time, During the cold war a rare of interests underpinned the superpowers policies towards the developing world. These different interest played out in different ways at different times.
