Fundamental cognitive error: people tend to underestimate the contribution of their beliefs, theories and knowledge to observation, memory and judgement. Na ve realism: the belief that: with the exception of a few tricks or illusions, things are as they appear to be. Illusion of the expert: underestimate complexity, overestimate simplicity, suspicious of introspection: we cannot trust our own perception, need experimental evidence. Model: an abstraction that permit scientists to focus their attention on the essential core of an otherwise complex problem, models of mental processes. Experiment: a controlled test of the model based on specific predictions. Badly"s worki(cid:374)g me(cid:373)ory model: subvocal speech, phonological buffer, mechanisms for reading the buffer, (articulatory loop) central executive, predicts you will do worse when saying abcs before recall. Central executive: the person within, decision maker. Articulatory loop: function, maintain information, recode visual to verbal, several item capacity.
